What Contributes to Skin Aging?

As you age, the appearance of your skin changes. Naturally, it thins out and loses fat while it gains wrinkles and age spots. If your skin is no longer looking radiant or smooth like it once did, don’t worry. There Are Many Ways To Protect Your Skin With Olive Oil!

First, let’s discuss what causes skin aging. Skin aging is induced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that cause your skin to wrinkle, lose elasticity, and gain a rough-texture. Intrinsic Aging is a physiological process that occurs on your skin, while extrinsic aging is caused by external environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation (sunlight). Protecting your skin from UV radiation can help your skin appear younger, smoother, and wrinkle-free. UV radiation is known to account for 80% of your skin aging, which causes the outermost layer of your skin’s epidermis to thicken. The epidermis thickens because the stratum corneum is impacted by the failure of degradation of corneocyte desmosomes (1). The constant exposure to UV radiation will increase DNA damage and mutation that can result in premature aging or carcinogenesis. In contrast, intrinsic factors cause the thinning of your skin’s epidermis driven by genetics, which is out of your control. The intrinsic factors affect your skin because the “fibrous extracellular matrix components including elastin, fibrillin, and collagens but also oligosaccharide are degenerated, which in turn influences the ability of the skin to retain bound water” (1). As a result, your skin becomes dry, saggy, and wrinkly.

Two Anti-aging properties of Olive Oil

1. Antioxidant

Antioxidants are reducing agents that reduce and neutralize reactive oxygen species formation on your skin. A natural source of antioxidants can be found in extra virgin olive oil. A study was conducted to determine the effect of olive oil application on stressed human skin. In the experiment, Souza and Costa obtained 6 skin samples from healthy participants to be used on culture mediums to determine whether olive oil can attenuate stress-induced signs of skin aging. To mimic stressed skin, cell cultures were treated with epinephrine because high levels of epinephrine were found in stressed skin. The researchers treated cultures with olive oil for 13 days to evaluate the epidermis and dermis thickness and collagen fibre content. The findings from the study indicate that “olive oil reversed the high epinephrine level‐induced reduction in epidermis and dermis thickness and collagen fibre content in ex vivo human skin” (2). In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde levels (MDA) induced by chronic stress were reduced by applying Olive Oil onto the skin. Higher levels of ROS and MDA levels indicate that there are collagen degradation and the skin’s epidermis and dermis are thinner. Thin skin can cause your skin to become more prone to bruises, cuts, and wrinkles. This study shows that olive oil is an effective treatment method to help prevent skin aging contributed by high levels of epinephrine, ROS, and malondialdehyde.

2. Monounsaturated Fatty Acids

Increased intake of Monounsaturated Fatty Acids From Olive Oil Can Reduce Oxidative Stress On Your Skin. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1264 female and 1655 male participants aged between 45 and 60 years old to determine the association of dietary monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and photoaging. Photoaging is referred to as skin damage from UV radiation, the most common example is sunlight. Dietary MUFA intakes were estimated using the SU.VI.MAX food composition table. To ensure the accuracy of the results, all participants who completed 10 diet records with a duration of 2 months for 2.5 years were included in the analysis. The results of the research indicated that “in both sexes, daily intakes of MUFA were lower among the most severe grades of photoaging than among the lowest grades of photoaging” (3). The lower risk of severe photoaging was associated with higher intakes of monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil in both sexes. As a result, it’s recommended for people to incorporate oils rich in MUFA such as olive oil in their meals to lower the risk of severe photoaging.
